Dettori wins Goodwood Cup on Opinion Poll
It was Dettori's third Goodwood Cup victory, and made up for a
tough race in the Sussex Stakes where Rio de la Plata ended third, well
behind favourite and winner Frankel.
Opinion Poll was a 9-2 favourite going into the race, but was pushed all the way by the 11-1 shot in a strong 15-horse field.
Nursing an injury after a fall at the weekend, Dettori did not
celebrate with his trademark jumping dismount, but said missing the
event had never entered his mind.
"I can have next week off but this is Goodwood," he said. "It's the winners that keep me going."
Dettori continued a successful day by bringing Meeznah home to win the I-Shares Fillies' Stakes later in the afternoon, setting a course record in the process.
Labarinto won the opening race of the day, the Betfred Stakes, as Ryan Moore rode his first winner of the festival. Richard Hughes took Chain Lightning to second place, close behind.
Soon after Kevin Ryan-trained horse Masamah swept to victory in the King George Stakes Group 2 race.
